Rio Tinto’s Perth Operation Centre control room houses the team responsible for transporting iron ore from mine to Port Headland. The Port and Rail Logistics (P&RL) team advocated for a control room overhaul to improve efficiency, accuracy, and productivity in their high stakes roles.

Challenge

Control room operators work long hours with intense hyper-detailed concentration. The original setup, in a tiered configuration, contributed to discomfort, noise issues, and suboptimal screen positioning. Employees requested improved ergonomics, better storage, noise reduction, and collaborative spaces.

  • High stakes: managing critical rail and port logistics

  • Long shifts: of 12+ hours each

  • Space constraints: for 45 control room consoles

  • Collaborative: design consensus across 100 team members

  • Mission-critical operations: with zero downtime during fitout

  • Operational continuity: required two-thirds of the space remain operational throughout installation

The impact on other control room occupants was really important and managed exceptionally well. We've never had a contractor who has been so supportive and listened to us one hundred percent throughout the whole process.
